1st National Convention on Lesson Study

Lesson Study: Collaboratively Improving Practice One Lesson at a Time

11-12 April 2019, NISMED Auditorium, University of the Philippines, Quezon City

The Philippine Association of Lesson and Learning Studies (PALS) and the UP National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) are jointly organizing the first national convention on lesson study on 11-12 April 2019 at UP NISMED, Diliman, Quezon City. It is the first of its kind for this particular field in teachers’ professional development. DepEd Order. no. 35 s.2016 recognizes school-based professional learning activities and lesson study is one such model.

UP NISMED initiated the creation of PALS in 2014 to open up opportunities for teachers in any subject area to learn about lesson study and use it for their professional learning activities. PALS is a non-profit organization with advocacy of supporting the development of lesson study in the Philippines as a professional learning activity for teachers, educators, and school administrators.

Lesson study is a professional learning model for teachers that involves investigating their own practice collaboratively to effect positive change in their teaching and eventually in students’ learning. It is a rich context for teachers’ action research and a new area of research for educators in higher education institutions in the country. With the theme Lesson Study: Collaboratively Improving  Practice One Lesson at a Time, the convention aims to

  • update participants on developments in lesson study at the international and local levels;
  • provide a forum for sharing of lesson study experiences and research results related to lesson study; and
  • encourage participants to research lesson study and produce research lessons to contribute in its development and adaptation to the Philippine educational context..

The two-day convention features plenary lectures and symposia. Posters of lesson study outputs will also be on display.  We are very proud to announce that our keynote speaker is Professor Christine Lee of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) Immediate Past President. Local and international speakers as well as practitioners of lesson study in the field have also been invited to share their expertise on a range of topics involving lesson study.

Since its inception, PALS has been partnering with public and private schools to explain and promote lesson study and support teachers in their conduct of lesson study through small-scale seminars. We are now scaling-up to a national level. We cordially invite you - teachers, educators, researchers, and school administrators - to join us in the 1st national convention on lesson study. Please visit our website (http://palsnet.org) for updates and details of registration.

See you on 11-12 April 2019 at the Science Teacher Training Center of NISMED, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.
